Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) is the predecessor to Transport Layer Security (TLS). The phrase SSL certificate is still commonly used for certificates involved in modern HTTPS connections, which use TLS. Encryption helps protect data in transit between systems. A certificate and HTTPS connection do not by themselves guarantee the safety of every part of a website or business.
